This is the official Miles-Dividend-MD-How-to-Save Flow chart.

Start at the top and see where the flow chart takes you.  What could be more fun?

In terms of posts that correspond to each step of the flow sheet….

Step 1:  Save a healthy proportion of your take home income.  Please read:

Step 2: On avoiding High interest debt please see rule 1 in:

Step 3,4,5,6 (order of investments including the lovely backdoor Roth) please see:

Step 7: Read!

Haven’t really covered references yet, but here are some of the books that I have really enjoyed on investing:

Great First Book: http://www.amazon.com/Think-Invest-Like-Warren-Buffett/dp/0071809953

Great intermediate book with all the concepts you’ll need to design your own portfolio:  http: //www.amazon.com/Guide-Winning-Investment-Strategy-Youll/dp/0312339879/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383636604&sr=1-1

Wonderful next level book about asset allocation including fun with math/spreadsheets!  http://www.amazon.com/The-Intelligent-Asset-Allocator-Portfolio/dp/0071362363

A Nice Book about fixed income (Bond) investing: http://www.amazon.com/Only-Guide-Winning-Strategy-Youll/dp/0312353634/ref=la_B000APJJ8O_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383636734&sr=1-5

And if reading a book about investments is not your cup of tea, don’t feel bad, you’ll likely have equivalent performance with your portfolio invested in Betterment without another thought.  (You just won’t have as much fun.)

Step 8:  I will cover Vanguard and Motif in the future but Betterment is reviewed in:

Introduced to your website by reading Million Miles Secret’s today post. I been reading your “Early retirement” series. I like how you explain them and found out it will take me 51 years to retire! But I was’t too shocked because I was trying very hard to pay off my tuition debt. Which took me about 1.5 years. Now I am trying to figure out how to not fall into the lifestyle inflation trap since next month 1/3 of my salary won’t go toward tuition debt. And I want to start the real saving. I am taking into consideration of “max out 401k”. I don’t think I can do it at this moment because that is almost half of my salary but, hopefully sometimes soon. Anyways, just want to let you know your step 2 – the miles game link is not working.

Claudia, I fixed the link earlier today after your helpful email. It should work for you now.

I’ll send you my email offline too.

      Thanks and good luck saving.

    I think your chart has a typo. Shouldn’t it read “> 6%”, not “< 6%"?

You are right Darin! Thanks for pointing this out.
